Just east of Zonnebeke lies Broodseinde. The hamlet develops around the intersection of Roeselare and Beselarestraat.

In late 1914, during the First Battle of Ypres, the Germans capture the heights from the British. Moments later, the French retake the hamlet, after which the front line stabilises. Living conditions in the trenches are anything but ideal. The French and German lines are close together. Both sides try to gain the upper hand and pour their men into useless attacks.

In 1977, a memorial was erected at the crossroads by the National Warriors’ Union in memory of the many Frenchmen, who died there during the war winter of 1914-1915.
