In the 18th century, this area was heavily forested.

Clearings caused a shortage of wood. Therefore, plots of land are bordered by trees and shrubs. This creates a dense green landscape that is strategically important in WWI.

It provides shelters and is essential as a defence. The shelling of 1917 destroys it, as does the drainage, making attacks very difficult.
