The walking trail in the Zonnebeekvallei (Zonnebeke Valley) is the final part of the 'The Legacy of Passchendaele' project. The municipality of Zonnebeke has created a walking trail and a memorial forest for 'Those who did not return'.

The walking trail immediately connects to the main entrance of the chateau domain creating thus  a green link  with the ‘Stroroute’. Along the track you ‘ll discover the region in a low-traffic way  amid a beautiful green environment.  Here you’ll have the opportunity to relax for a while or to commemorate those who did not return. In the planted forest every tree stands for a military casualty of Zonnebeke and its boroughs in WWI. Altogether there are 218 trees, 217 for the deceased soldiers and the 218th tree representing the civilian casualties. The forest is divided into several year belts. Signboards distinctly visualize how many people died in each period. The files of these victims can be consulted in the Research Centre of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917.
