Polygon WoodStart and parking: Dienst voor Toerisme, Berten Pilstraat 5A, 8980 Zonnebeke

A map of the hiking trail 'The Legacy of Passchendaele' makes you discover our beautiful municipality. The southern trail runs towards Polygon Wood and the former battlefield near Beselare. Polygon Wood has acquired a special place in the war story because it was recaptured four times on the enemy troops present there. Besides the small CWGC Polygon Wood Cemetery, you will also find CWGC Buttes New British Cemetery where mainly Australian and New Zealand soldiers found their final resting place. Characteristic of the site is the Australian monument on the hill on which you have a beautiful overview of the cemetery and the surroundings. The New Zealand Memorial to the Missing, inspired by the classical Greek temple characterizes the cemetery. The landscape is particularly pleasant for hiking. Especially the idyllic Polygon Creek valley and Polygon Wood will make you imagine you are in a different region because of its atypical views and variety in vegetation.

A map of the hiking trail can be found at the information panel at the starting point. The route is signposted with hexagonal signs and along the trail the information is displayed on multilingual information panels.
