De Stroroute { The Straw Trail }(30 km)

Start and Parking: Dienst voor Toerisme, Berten Pilstraat 5A, 8980 Zonnebeke

In the middle of the 19th century (industrial changes), a railway connection between Ypres and Roeselare ‘Railway 64' had been constructed. There were stops in Zonnebeke and between Moorslede and Passchendaele. During the First World War it was used to supply troops and material. For the Australians, it was their 'Road to Passchendaele', because it was the only road that was somewhat accessible in the muddy landscape. After the war, the railway was the best and fastest way to reach and rebuild the devastated region.

The railway was afterwards redesigned as a green recreational axis between Ypres and Roeselare. This track-bed offers a perfect relaxing hiking trail whether you hit it on foot or on horseback or by bike. From the Memorial Museum Passchendaele this route is the best hiking trail to reach CWGC Tyne Cot Cemetery and Passchendaele.
